Buy Renewable Energy

Maryland is an energy choice state. This means that individuals and families have the freedom to select their energy provider. The local utility continues to operate and maintain the delivery infrastructure (poles, pipes, wires, etc.). But power producers compete to provide customers the energy they require. Many power producers offer energy from renewable sources.

Accessing renewable energy is easier than ever before. The costs to produce renewable energy continue to decline, and in many cases are now lower than energy from carbon-based sources.

The state of Maryland makes it easy to identify renewable energy providers. The Maryland Public Service Commission operates a consumer portal to facilitate the process.

The Shopping Portal is easy to use. Simply fill in your utility district and other items on the left, and tap “filter” results. Make sure to indicate “yes” for renewable.

A variety of factors are worthwhile to consider when selecting a provider.

Renewable Percentage: How much of the energy you purchase is from renewable sources? Yaroki recommends at least 50%. Standard offer service from utilities is typically less than 10%.

Introductory Offers / Cancellation Fees: Check rates to see if they will change after an introductory period, or initial term. Also, some energy provider contracts require a cancellation fee.

Choose a Community Solar Program

Community solar programs enable the direct purchase of solar energy. The owner of a suitable location installs a solar energy system, and participants in the program effectively co-own it. They contribute to the costs of operation, and receive a credit on their utility bills proportional to their contribution and how much energy is produced by the solar panels.
